DOUGLAS AAGARD
The incredible and varied landscape of the west is the basis of inspiration for Douglas Aagard. Raised on a ranch in Western Montana’s Bitteroot Valley, he learned the necessity of hard work and perseverance. Here, sandwiched between farmlands and majestic mountains, he gained a deep love for the land. And also a love for drawing it.
Douglas is primarily a self taught artist. Aside from constant painting, his best education has come from association with successful artists, among whom Gary Ernest Smith has had the greatest influence.
A great milestone for Douglas was achieved recently, when he quit his job of many years as a carpenter, and devoted his whole time to painting. He lives in Rural Utah with his wife and three children in a 19th century pioneer home that he is currently restoring.
ARTIST STATEMENT
A good friend and great artist gave me two pieces of advice I will always remember. First, ”Don’t be afraid to fail”, and second, ”Sometimes you have to get outside your comfort zone.” I believe the two go hand in hand, and are vital to maintain growth and a fresh perspective.
I love a clean white canvas because of the possibility it holds. Before I paint I have to ask myself why. What will make this painting unique, interesting or wonderful. To me being an artist is incredible. It’s very humbling to know your livelihood depends on others having great appreciation for your efforts. At the same time it fosters powerful motivation.
After so many prayers and tireless work, I can’t help but feel grateful and happy as each little success reminds me of a dream coming to life.
